The much-anticipated Broadway musical, Hamilton, premiered in Sydney on Saturday 27 March, beginning its long-awaited season at the iconic Sydney Lyric Theatre.
The Broadway sensation focuses on the previously untold story of Alexander Hamilton and combines hip hop, jazz, blues, rap, and R&B with traditional musical theatre conventions. The production has been praised for its diverse cast as well as its take on the story of one of the founding fathers of the United States.
The performance received a standing ovation and ended with a speech from US producer Jeffrey Seller who praised Sydney’s lockdown approach. The live performance was the first time Hamilton has been performed on a stage after a 13-month break due to COVID-19.
Opening night red carpet was full of celebrities including Delta Goodrem, Guy Sebastian, and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian who wore a custom jacket designed by Hamilton’s costume designers.
The show, which has a run-time of nearly three hours, features Jason Arrow in the lead role as Alexander Hamilton, making his debut in a lead role. The 35-person cast, partially chosen by Lin-Manuel Miranda the creator, composer, and writer of Hamilton, also includes Lyndon Watts as Aaron Burr, Chloé Zuel as Eliza Hamilton, Akina Edmonds as Angelica Schuyler, Elandrah Eramiha as Peggy Schuyler, Matu Ngaropo as George Washington, and Brent Hill as King George III.
Lin Manuel Miranda says, “I am incredibly excited by the cast we have assembled for the premiere of Hamilton in Australia.”
The Australian production of Hamilton in Sydney currently has tickets on sale through to November of 2021 with eight productions a week.
